From the Director

Sunday's tip is to pack a van of friends & picnic and head for the Annual Sculpture Symposium at Andres Institute of Art in Brookline NH, just south of Milford on Rte 13 from the town square. Go early and come back time for Italian cookies at Mariposa for the Festa of St. Francis of Asissi at 1pm and Sebastian Lockwood's Gilgamesh at 2pm.

The sculpture mountain with permanent installations on 9 miles of hiking trails is open to cars this week only while nine international sculptures participate in the annual two-week symposium to create and install (by crane) permanent site-specific sculptures on the former ski mountain.

For more info, e-mail director John Weidman at prachinh@aol.com or ask Mariposa gallery coordinator Nadiya this week at the museum. We have brochures.

This week's tip from our Sunday Brunch at little Paris on the Connecticut, Burdick's restaurant and chocolate temptery in Walpole. Can't decide whether Burdick's or Peterborough' Ava Marie's "Dark" is the Best (both better than Swiss easily!) and so we keep going back for another bar to taste test with friends. We hope to go to this:

Oktoberfest Live Music, German Menu & Chef, Riesling Wines: Lunch or Dinner Fri. Sept. 30 or Sat. Oct. 1 at The Restaurant at Burdick Chocolate, Main Street, Walpole. By Reservation.

The menu looks terrific, from mussels in Riesling to duck with brussel sprouts (well, that's what I am dreamin' on), sausage, trout or "skate," German split pea soup, so much more. We vouch for the chef, who is the regular pastry chef and his confections are indeed the stuff dreams are made on.  PS. no "schnitzel" on menu as these dishes are actually Austrian. Anybody remember the dear Austrian family in dirndls that ran the restaurant on the hill in Dublin that later became Steve and Frona Avery's Deacon Brodie's Tavern? We can't remember the name, can you?

So, if German food is your "mother tongue" homecooking, make a RESERVATION for lunch or dinner online or by phone at Burdick's, 603 756 9058. www.burdickchocolate.com.

October 2nd, Andres Insitute Open House for the closing of symposium; 10am-3pm.

Andres Institute is conducting their 7th symposium "Liberated Pedagogy", having invited five artists from: USA, Cuba, Switzerland (via Italy), USA (Portsmouth, NH), and Canada.  Ten miles of sculpture trails for walking are open every day, all day (dawn to dusk) all year around. There is no entry fee, but donations are welcome. Visit: www.andresinstitute.org.

Sacred Arts Tour of the Drepung Gomang Monastery - Keene High School Friends of Tibet Club is honored to have been chosen as the host and NH site.  The group of 10 Tibetan monks  from the monastery in southern India will visit Sept. 27 to Oct. 5.

Oct. 3rd & 4th - Open to the public to observe mandala construction in the main foyer.  KHS asks that all visitors check in at the main office first, and that they respect the monks' space, as the mandala is a sacred piece.  Items will be available for sale, and donations will be gratefully accepted. They will also be giving presentations and slide shows for students, visiting classes, and selling their hand-made products.

Oct. 4th, Tuesday at 5pm - Slide Show Presentation and  Mandala Dismantling Ceremony. The monks will sweep up the mandala in the ritualistic way and walk in procession to the nearest body of water, which is the pond next to Alumni Field.  The mandala will be poured out of a vase into the water so its spirit can flow forever through the world.

Anyone wishing to make a donation by mail can do so by sending a check to: KHS Friends of Tibet ( S.A. Tour) , 43 Arch St., Keene, NH 03431.

Sincerely,
Linda Marsella
