44 STUNNING STORY QUILTS NARRATING 400 YEARS OF THE AFRICAN AMERICAN EXPERIENCE
On Exhibit September 1 – October 14, 2018
at Two Concurrent Locations:
Mariposa Museum & World Culture Center in Peterborough, NH
Canaan Street Meetinghouse in Canaan, NH
These beautifully handcrafted quilts, created by members of the Women of Color Quilters Network, narrate the history of the African American experience, capturing the stories of freedom’s heroes. By exploring events of four centuries through the fiber artistry of women of color, the quilts of this exhibition bear witness to and relate perspectives that written history has often neglected.
Organized by Dr. Carolyn L. Mazloomi, courtesy of the Women of Color Quilters Network.
Presented by the Mariposa Museum & World Culture Center in collaboration with the Canaan Historic District. The exhibit has special significance for Canaan, the founding home of the Noyes Academy (one of the first integrated high schools to admit African American students) in 1835 and also the site of the Academy’s destruction by an angry mob.
