ON EXHIBIT: The GAME Initiative: Global Alliance of Muslims for Equality
February 9 – May 9

“According to research, the more Muslim Europe becomes, the more anti-Muslim Europe becomes. The mission of GAME – the Global Alliance of Muslims for Equality – is to change that narrative.”
– Padraig O’Malley

Ben Aissa from Brussels, Belgium – GAME

In 2017, under the guidance of international peacemaker Padraig O’Malley, 48 young Muslim men and women from cities across Europe gathered in Glencree, Ireland. Their purpose: To set about collectively charting a course of action to affirm their rights as European citizens, their belief in Islam as a religion of peace, and plans for addressing prejudice and changing perceptions of Muslims across Europe.

Mariposa Museum Executive Director Karla Hostetler was privileged to take part in that first conference as a facilitator. At the beautiful Kippure Estate and Glencree Center for Peace and Reconciliation, in County Wicklow, she watched with respect as participants from across Europe met each other, broke the ice, shared experiences and ideas, addressed complex and issues, worked through their own issues of inclusion and power dynamics, and ultimately found common ground and a shared purpose in GAME.

Since then a second conference has been held, the roots of a peaceful transnational community have taken hold, new members have joined, and work has begun. These black and white photographic portraits of GAME participants at the second conference, were taken by Lauren Lombard of Headwaters Relief Organization.

The Mariposa is pleased to join in the spirit of GAME’s vsion by offering a glimpse into the world of GAME and these young people as an example of peacemaking in the raw, when the way and the outcome are still uncertain, but the need for change is deeply and personally felt by so many and courageously shouldered.

We are grateful to Lauren Lombard and Rebecca Thombley, also of Headwaters, for bringing this concept to us, and to Padraig O’Malley, Founding Director of GAME and Nancy Riordan, colleague of Professor O’Malley at the John Joseph Moakley Chair for Peace and Reconciliation, John W. McCormack Graduate School of Policy and Global Studies at UMass/Boston.
