Melodies on the Eastern Wind: An Evening of Traditional Ottoman and Turkish Music

Boston based musicians Ceren Türkmenoğlu, Michael K. Harrist and George Lernis will present a concert of Ottoman and Turkish music at the Mariposa in Peterborough at 7pm on Saturday, December 7. Highlighting the cosmopolitan nature of Istanbul and other urban centers of the Ottoman world, the ensemble will present a wide range of repertoire spanning five centuries that features pieces by composers of Turkish, Polish, Greek and Moldavian origin. The performance will feature instruments such as rebab, yaylı tanbur, bendir, küdum, santur and violin and will include taksim, or improvising within the mode of the tradition.

ABOUT THE MUSICIANS

Melodies on the Eastern Wind: An Evening of Traditional Ottoman and Turkish MusicCeren Türkmenoğlu (www.cerenturkmenoglu.com) is a versatile musician; a classical violinist, a multi-instrumentalist in Turkish music and an explorer of ethnomusicology. Studying in Ankara, Turkey and Leipzig, Germany, she worked in Ankara State Opera and Ballet Orchestra and Istanbul State Symphony Orchestra. In 2017, she moved to Boston where she leads an active musical life performing in recitals, chamber music ensembles and orchestras in and around Boston. Alongside her classical music career, she is a performer of Turkish music and performs on traditional instruments such as rebab and bendir. Through her music, she aims to revive the traditional roots and bring out the interconnections in between cultures. Her project ‘Music from Where the Sun Rises’, that focuses on Turkish classical music, was awarded the Live Arts Boston grant from The Boston Foundation.

Michael K. Harrist (www.michaelharrist.com) is a multi-instrumentalist (specializing in contrabass and yaylı tanbur), composer, educator and concert promoter based in Kittery, ME. Michael works with artists in a wide array of traditions and has performed throughout North America and Europe with various ensembles including Ameranouche, Ross Daly and Kelly Thoma, Çeşni Trio, Orchestrotica, Luke Concannon, Sol & Kiel, Capillary Action and Mitos Orchestra. Michael’s teachers include W. A. Mathieu, Ross Daly, Pandit Ramesh Mishra, George Ruckert, Fred Stubbs, Evgenios Voulgaris, Aruna Narayan, Stan Charkey, James Macdonald, Amer Latif and Refik Algan.

Born and raised in Nicosia, Cyprus George Lernis (www.georgelernismusic.com) is a drummer and world percussionist. In addition to the drums George specializes in a number of instruments such as: the Santur (microtonal dulcimer), Darbuka, Bendir (frame drum), Riq (Arabic tambourine) and Davul. George holds a bachelor’s degree from Berklee College of Music in Jazz Performance and a master’s degree from Longy Conservatory in Modern American Music. Throughout his studies in the US he attended private lessons with master musicians such as: Bob Gullotti, John Ramsay, Kenwood Dennard, Dave DiCenso, Mark Walker, Jerry Leake, Dave Samuels, Gary Barton and Gary Chaffee among others. Over the last few years George has recorded and collaborated with prominent figures and ensembles such as: Dave Liebman, Anat Cohen, Antonio Sanchez, Tiger Okoshi and A Far Cry String Orchestra just to name a few. George has performed in venues such as the Carnegie Hall (NY) and Lincoln Center (NY).
