Reception for Uncaged Art Exhibit

Wednesday, October 9 | 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Reception for Uncaged Art ExhibitThis reception for the Uncaged Art exhibit (on display at Mariposa through a partnership with the Peterborough Lights for Liberty Coalition) will offer a rare chance to hear from a speaker who has been at the border, see powerful art produced by detained migrant youth, and support the cause of migrant children and families.

This reception is free and open to the public, as is the exhibit. The reception will include a keynote address by Glen Ring, a former social studies teacher and current ESL instructor in Concord, and remarks by Ruth Sanchez, a retired teacher from St. Paul’s School who immigrated from the Dominican Republic. Ring and Sanchez are leaders of a small group within Concord’s Kent Street Coalition that created the traveling version of the exhibit.

“I can’t remember exactly when I first saw these artworks, but I immediately wanted everyone to see them,” says Glen Ring. “They speak to your heart – you see the beauty inside children who are being dehumanized.”

Ruth Sanchez speaks of this, too. “When you are in dehumanizing circumstances, as these children are, creating art is a way to reconnect with who you are, to survive,” she says.
