Patricia Klindienst, Refugee Farmers
In her book, The Earth Knows My Name: Food, Culture, and Sustainability in the Gardens of Ethnic Americans, Patricia Klindienst gathers stories of people rarely presented in books about American gardens: immigrant and ethnic Americans. Patricia will share her research at the Mariposa into how the making of gardens help ethnic and immigrant Americans maintain and revive cultures in danger of being lost while contributing to the rich cuisine and evolving culture of the wider community and keeping alive a relationship to the land all but lost to mainstream American culture.
A reception follows, and special guests will include NH immigrant farmers working with NH's Fresh Start Farms, a project of the Organization for Refugee and Immigrant Success (ORIS). Fresh Start Farms' Marketing Coordinator Andrea Cadwell, of Peterborough, will describe Fresh Start's work. Admission $10 for members, $15 for non-members.
