During the Atlantic slave trade, more Africans were brought in bondage to Brazil than to any other country iin the Americas -- 10 times the number brought to North America. This exhibit from the National Endowment for the Humanities explores how African cultures blended with indigenous and colonial Portuguese traditions to form the unique, vibrant, and complex cultural mosaic of present-day Brazil. EXHIBIT: Jacob A. Riis: How the Other Half Lives

At the end of the 19th century, New York City was home to a thriving economy -- and the worst slums on earth. Jacob Riis, a Danish immigrant working as a newspaper reporter, saw in flash powder photography a way to bring the harsh realities of people living in alleyways, tenements, and sweatshops to a wide audience.
