This year’s summer benefit for Mariposa at historic Lakefalls Lodge has the theme, Feed the Planet, and will feature award-winning author Patricia Klindienst (The Earth Knows My Name: Food, Culture, and Sustainability in the Gardens of Ethnic Americans
) as well as a multimedia presentation of new work by famed photographer George Steinmetz, exploring the world of large-scale agriculture. We will also celebrate how our local farmers and chefs feed our part of the planet with hors d’oeuvres from places like Sunflowers, Nature’s GreenGrocer, Harlow’s, Linda Stavely, the Monadnock Food Coop, NoriOh, Carol’s Creations, and more! Plus there will be seasonal cocktails and raffle prizes that range from a basket of farmers’ market goodies to a whale watch. and we’ll draw the winners of our Destination Raffle to Provence and New York City! Bowing to Mother Nature, we plan to hold this year’s event inside Lakefalls’ historic Adirondack style lodge.
Patricia Klindienst’s work explores how immigrants to the U.S. hold onto their cultures and past through gardens and food traditions. Methods for growing food, what kinds of food are grown, and how foods are prepared and enjoyed are all part of her unique look at how food can be a “bridge carrying immigrants over a river of loss.”
George Steinmetz, who originally planned to join us at Lakefalls, will now be with us virtually, as he was called away on yet another field assignment, this time in China. He’s working with us to share his never-before-shown images, along with commentary, to create a professionally produced multimedia presentation that will begin the program, made possible by Francis H. Williams. George Steinmetz has taken photography to new heights in 27 countries, from whimsical views of New York, to the Great Wall of China; and from mountains in Antarctica to salt deserts in Iran.
