Visit South Africa’s Kopanang CommunityThe Mariposa is the guardian of the Kopanang Universe Canticle, a stunning traveling exhibit of embroidered tapestries depicting the unfolding story of the universe as seen by the women of South Africa’s Kopanang Community. If you have been inspired by the Canticle and its creators, a community of women supporting each other (and their children) through HIV/AIDS with fellowship, artwork, music, and business, an opportunity exists to visit and serve this community outside of Johannesburg this April. The 6-day service trip has been organized by a group of lively Australians and includes living with a family in the township (or B&B), touring Johannesburg, a joyous Easter Mass in Soweto, and taking children to a game park, along with Kopanang Founder Sister Sheila Flynn.
The program officially begins on Tuesday morning April 18, 2017. Depending on what flight you arrange, you can get there up to the day before. The other members of the group will be arriving on Friday, April 14, staying at a hotel in Johannesburg, with various tours offered during the weekend, then travelling to the project on the morning of Monday April 17 to meet their host families.
Costs for the 8 days of the Kopanang Immersion are approximately $1000 per person, not including airfare (which each person arranges on his or her own), plus the hotel and tour costs for the weekend prior to arriving at the project. And you may want to add on some travel within South Africa before or after. (Because of the strength of the dollar, it’s a travel bargain at the moment.)
If you would like more details, contact Joyce Healy firstname.lastname@example.org, who has recently visited Kopanang. She can provide a more detailed itinerary, and can answer your questions. Participants must commit by the end of the year. Wouldn’t this be a great Christmas present for a special person (maybe even you)?
